What sets a pro drying towel apart from any old microfibre cloth? The SONAX pro drying towel pairs serious soak-up with a soft, scratch-safe face — for fast, streak-free drying with no water marks left on paint or glass.
Drying after the wash is where a lot of scratches actually happen — not during the wash itself. Hard fibres, too little soak-up or the wrong material drag grit across freshly washed paint and leave fine holograms or wipe marks behind. The SONAX PROFILINE MicrofaserTrockenTuch "PLUS" is built for exactly this make-or-break step: a high-absorbency microfibre weave pulls the wash water up over a wide area, so you don't have to drag the towel back over the same spot again and again.
The quality of a drying towel only really shows on the second and third use: cheap microfibre cloths lose their soak-up after a few washes, because the fibres gum up with detergent residue or shrink at the wrong wash temperature. The PROFILINE towel is built to last — the fibre structure holds its absorbency over many wash cycles when you treat it by the care notes. That makes the higher up-front price pay off against bargain cloths, because you're not replacing them after a few weeks.
Detailing1's tip from the shop: When you dry, go with the "pat-and-drag" method: lay the towel on, press it down gently, then glide it flat across the surface — instead of pressing and rubbing. That way the cloth's soak-up does the work without grinding grit into the paint. For maximum efficiency you can also fold the MicrofaserTrockenTuch "PLUS" double — a bigger contact pad takes up more water per pass. After use, wash the cloth at 40°C max with no fabric softener — softener seals the microfibre pores and kills the soak-up for good.
The SONAX PROFILINE MicrofaserTrockenTuch "PLUS" uses a multi-layer microfibre structure that works on the capillary principle: fine fibres form a dense capillary net that actively pulls water out of the contact zone and deep into the cloth. Unlike single-layer microfibre cloths, where the outer layer saturates fast and the water stays on the paint, the PLUS cloth keeps taking water on over the whole drying session.
The fibre thickness is dialled in for drying on delicate paint. Microfibres come in different deniers — thinner fibres with more of them per area are softer but more absorbent; thicker fibres are tougher but rougher. The PROFILINE drying towel finds the balance: enough softness for scratch-free contact with polished surfaces, and enough fibre density for high soak-up per pass.
The size is built for drying a whole panel fast — bonnet, roof, door — in one or two passes. A cloth that's too small means constant refolding and more wiping overall, which bumps up the scratch risk. The PROFILINE PLUS format lets you work big areas in a few passes, which saves time and goes easy on the paint.
How long the microfibre structure lasts comes down mostly to care. Washing with no fabric softener at 40°C max is the number-one rule: softener lays a film over the microfibres and cuts their soak-up for good. Tumble-drying low or air-drying keeps the fibre structure better than high heat, which can melt the fibres together. Looked after right, the PLUS cloth holds its absorbency over dozens of washes.
One key quality mark of PROFILINE microfibre cloths is the check for contaminants and dyes. Cheap microfibre cloths can carry dye residue from production that bleeds onto wet paint on first use and leaves discolouration. SONAX uses tested microfibre materials in the PROFILINE line that are free of damaging residue — important when the cloth goes onto freshly sealed or polished surfaces.
The right drying technique is what separates pro work from a quick home wash. For pro drying you start at the highest panels (roof, bonnet) and work down — that way leftover water runs down to be taken up last. Sills and lower door edges, where water pools, get done last, since they need more pressure and soak-up work.
The number-one rule when drying with microfibre: lay the cloth, don't rub. Too aggressive a wipe pushes the cloth into the paint and acts like gentle sanding, especially if sand or brake dust didn't fully wash out. The wide-area lay technique of the PROFILINE PLUS cloth uses the cloth's own weight and the capillary action for water pickup — no pressure, no rubbing.
In detailing businesses a clearly defined cloth-rotation system applies: every fresh cloth gets swapped after one car if it's visibly soiled. Lightly damp cloths can run across several cars as long as they haven't picked up grit. The 24-piece and 50-piece packs of the PROFILINE drying towel make that rotation work without breaking the workflow — enough spare cloths for a full day across several cars.
On freshly sealed or waxed cars, go extra gentle: only use the drying towel with minimal pressure on fresh sealants, since a sealant in its early cure phase can react badly to mechanical pressure. In that case a blow-dryer step (compressed air or a blower) before the towel step is worth it, to take off most of the water film with no cloth contact at all.
The PROFILINE drying towel covers a wide range of jobs. For home detailers washing their own car by hand regularly, the single cloth is the ideal format — long-lasting enough for the whole life of the car when looked after right. One or two drying towels in the house cover normal needs completely.
For detailing enthusiasts running several cars or doing more involved jobs, the 24-piece pack is the way to go. With a dozen fresh cloths you can dry a whole car without touching the same spot twice with the same cloth — maximum scratch prevention through strict cloth rotation. The rest stand ready for glass and interior jobs, where the SONAX PROFILINE MicrofaserTuch "Glas" is the specialist for streak-free window and glass cleaning.
For commercial work — car detailing, vehicle prep at the dealership, mobile detailing services — the 50-piece pack is the most economical unit. The price per cloth drops a lot in the big pack against buying singles, and the quantity covers several days of use with no wash in between. For shops doing plenty of cars a day, a well-organised cloth stock is a real factor in efficiency and quality control.
Beyond drying bodywork panels, the drying towel also suits wheels, windows and chrome — anywhere you want the water off residue-free. On wheels rinsed after a wheel cleaner, an absorbent drying towel makes sense to stop water spots on the spokes. A separate cloth for that area — not the same one as for paint — stops brake dust or cleaner residue carrying over onto paint.
In the SONAX PROFILINE microfibre range, the PROFILINE drying towel has a specific job: it's the drying towel — dialled in for maximum soak-up and big areas. The SONAX PROFILINE MicrofaserTuch "Soft Touch" is built for polishing work — softer, but less absorbent, ideal for buffing off polishes and waxes. The PROFILINE MicrofaserTuch "Glas" is dialled in for smoothness and streak-free results on glass. Each cloth has its set job — and the PLUS drying towel fills the most important one: fast, scratch-free drying after the wash.
Against chamois leathers or synthetic window blades, the microfibre cloth brings real advantages: it's washable, long-lasting, gentler on paint and gives off no dyes or chemical residue. A chamois needs regular keep-it-damp care and can go hard if stored wrong, then it starts scratching. The PROFILINE PLUS drying towel pairs soak-up, size and softness in one format made for pro results.
For the SONAX PROFILINE Coating Towel there's a clearly separate job: the Coating Towel is purely for taking off and spreading ceramic coatings and shouldn't be used as a general drying towel, to keep the coating fibres from getting contaminated. The PLUS drying towel and the Coating Towel work together in pro detailing — each for its own step in the process.
The PROFILINE drying towel comes in three formats: single cloth, 24-piece pack and 50-piece pack. Picking the right one comes down to how much you use: home detailers go single, enthusiasts the 24-pack, commercial shops the 50-pack.
If you're just getting into proper microfibre use, you can start with the single cloth and judge the quality in your own hands before grabbing a bigger pack. The PLUS cloth's longevity makes the single buy pay off even for occasional users — a well-cared-for drying towel lasts several years of car ownership. For shops with regular demand, the 50-pack is the most economical option with the lowest price per cloth.
The SONAX PROFILINE microfibre system has the right cloth for every job: the PLUS drying towel for the drying phase, the "Glas" cloth for windows and mirrors, the "Soft Touch" cloth for polishing and sealant removal and the Coating Towel for ceramic coatings. With all four cloths in the set you're fully kitted for pro detailing — no compromises on material choice and no risk of reaching for the wrong cloth in the wrong place.
