Top Coat Dull = matt-original (OEM-Look), Glossy = mittlerer Glanz, High Gloss = hoher Glanz.

COLOURLOCK Leather Colour for VW: the original standard colour for factory-true leather repairs

What is COLOURLOCK Leather Colour for VW? — This exact-match leather standard colour lets you refresh and repair VW leather true to the original, for a lasting, even finish that looks just like it left the factory.

COLOURLOCK Leather Colour (VW) is a precisely matched leather standard colour for professionally repairing, refreshing and re-dyeing VW leather interiors. The colours are built from original VW colour samples and blend seamlessly into what's already there. Perfect for seat bolsters, steering wheels, armrests, door cards and every pigmented smooth leather inside the car where colour accuracy and that OEM look really matter.

Original VW colours – Developed from factory-matched colour samples.
For repair & refresh – Made for wear, fading and colour loss.
Professional finish – Great adhesion and an even colour result.

💡 Day-to-day from Detailing1: At our showroom in Nordhorn (Bosinks Kamp 8) we see the same thing on VW jobs all the time — colour loss on seat bolsters and steering wheels gets masked with a cheap care spray that doesn't last four weeks. Dab Leather Colour (VW) on with a microfibre pad in 2–3 thin coats, leave 30 min between coats, then seal it with Top Coat Dull — and the result lasts 2–3 years, just like factory.

Prep, dab on thin, seal with Top Coat

You lay Leather Colour (VW) down in 2–3 thin coats, leave 30 min between them, then seal with Top Coat at the end. Thin coats last for years; thick ones crack.

Before you colour, wash the leather with a leather cleaner and degrease it with Plastic Cleaner or cleaning alcohol. Fill deep cracks and worn spots with Filler or Super Filler and sand them smooth with 1000-grit abrasive fleece. Then dab the VW colours on with a microfibre pad, work them out with a soft brush, or spray them on for larger repairs.

Once it's fully dry — at least 4 hours — seal it with Top Coat: Dull for a matte, original OEM look, Glossy for a mid sheen, High Gloss for maximum brilliance. One litre of Leather Colour covers roughly 8–10 m² of leather, and a 250 ml bottle is enough for a full pair of seats plus the steering wheel. The same workflow works on everything from the seat cushion through the door card to the centre armrest.

Pigmented leather yes, natural and suede no

Leather Colour (VW) is strictly for pigmented smooth leather — the standard in modern cars. Natural leather, aniline leather and suede behave differently and need other COLOURLOCK lines.

The water-based formula bonds with the pigment layer of modern automotive leather, stays flexible and moves with the leather without cracking. On natural or open-pore aniline leather the colour soaks unevenly into the fibre and blotches the leather — that's where Leather Fresh (VW) as the care option or dedicated aniline lines come in. Suede, velour and Alcantara get treated with Nubuk Fresh (VW), which keeps the rough nap open instead of gluing it shut.

When matching the original factory colour matters and you're restoring a large area, Leather Colour is the right call. When it's just a small spot — a worn steering wheel, a single crack — Fluid Leather (VW) in the 20 ml tube goes further and gives you more control. And if the leather only looks slightly faded, Leather Fresh as the care option is usually enough.

For detailers, workshops and classic-car owners

Leather Colour (VW) is the pro pick for detailers, independent workshops and keen owners who put value retention and true VW colour ahead of a quick care fix.

On lease returns, used-car prep and classic and youngtimer restorations, OEM colour accuracy decides both value retention and resale price. The pro 4-step workflow (clean, sand, dye, seal) takes 4 hours per part including drying and gives you a result that lasts 2–3 years just like factory. One litre of Leather Colour works out to about 30 cents per 100 ml of worked area — a trade quote including Top Coat lands around 12 euros per part.

For plain care routines without workshop tools, Leather Colour is overkill — Leather Fresh (VW) has you covered there. For spot repairs on the steering wheel or single cracks, Fluid Leather or the Leather Care Sets (VW) make more sense. But if you want to restore whole seat bolsters, steering wheels or door cards and you care about true VW colour, there's no way around the 1-litre bottle or the 250 ml container.

What is COLOURLOCK Leather Colour for VW?

COLOURLOCK Leather Colour (VW) is a water-based, elastic standard leather dye in original VW colours. It is used for repairing, refreshing, or recolouring pigmented smooth leather in vehicle interiors — seats, steering wheels, armrests, door panels.

How do I apply Leather Colour (VW) correctly?

First, thoroughly clean and degrease the leather. Fill and sand any damage with filler. Then, dab, wipe, or spray on a thin layer of Leather Colour — 2-3 thin coats are better than one thick one. After complete drying, seal with Top Coat (Dull/Glossy/High Gloss).

What is the difference to Leather Fresh?

Leather Colour is the professional repair dye (1L/250ml, can be sealed with Top Coat). Leather Fresh is the conditioning colour cream (1L/100ml) for lighter refreshes without extensive preparation. For deep abrasion → Leather Colour; for dull surfaces → Leather Fresh.

Do the colours really match VW exactly?

The colours are based on original VW factory colour samples. For heavily faded leather, we still recommend a colour test in an inconspicuous area, as the original leather darkens or fades over the years.

What are the most common mistakes we see in the workshop?

Three classics: (1) Leather not degreased beforehand – colour doesn't adhere. (2) Too thick a layer applied – forms cracks when drying. (3) Top Coat sealing omitted – abrasion resistance less than 6 months. With proper preparation, the result lasts 2-3 years.

Do I absolutely need a Top Coat?

Yes, for lasting abrasion resistance. Without Top Coat, the colour on seat bolsters and steering wheels will wear off within a few weeks. Top Coat Dull = matte-original (OEM look), Glossy = medium gloss, High Gloss = high gloss.

Care Instructions for Standard Leather Colour (VW):

Leather Colour (VW) is exclusively suitable for pigmented smooth leather—the standard in modern automotive applications. Natural leather, aniline leather, and suede react differently and require other COLOURLOCK product lines.

The water-based formula bonds with the pigment layer of modern automotive leathers, remains elastic, and follows leather movements without cracking. With natural leather or open-pore aniline leather, the dye absorbs unevenly into the fibers, staining the leather blotchy—in these cases, Leather Fresh (VW) as a care variant or special aniline lines are used. Suede, velour, and Alcantara are treated with Nubuk Fresh (VW), which preserves the rough fiber structure instead of gluing it together.

If colour fidelity to the original factory colour is crucial and a large area of the component needs to be restored, Leather Colour is the right choice. If only a small spot (steering wheel abrasion, single crack) needs to be repaired, Fluid Leather (VW) in the 20 ml tube is more economical and precise. If the leather only appears slightly faded, Leather Fresh as a care variant is usually sufficient.
