Technology & material: why synthetic suede?

The material in the GYEON Q²M Suede is no ordinary microfibre cloth. Synthetic suede – also called „suede“ or faux suede – has a specific surface texture that's fundamentally different from standard microfibre. The fibres stand upright and are packed evenly and densely, which lets product come off onto the surface very evenly. Unlike looped microfibre, suede has no gaps in the weave where coating could pool and clump up.

That property is decisive when you're working with ceramic coatings. Ceramic coatings are high in viscosity and dry very fast once they hit the air. An applicator cloth with an uneven fibre structure spreads the product unevenly and leaves High Spots – patches where too much product went down, showing up after the cure as matte or glossy smears. The Q²M Suede stops that with its even, controlled fibre structure.

The synthetic suede structure also means the cloth builds no static charge as you apply – the kind that would pull in dust. That matters especially when you're working somewhere dusty. Applying it right: how to use the Q²M Suede properly

The right technique matters just as much as the right tool with ceramic coatings. The applicator cloth is a helper – the technique decides the result.

Prep: The cloth should be dry and clean. Put two to four drops of coating straight onto the cloth or onto a small patch of it – never more than you need. Too much product at once is one of the most common ceramic coating mistakes and leads to High Spots that are tough to remove.

Application: Run the cloth over the paint with even, light pressure – first in one direction (say horizontal), then cross-hatched (vertical). This cross-hatch method makes sure the product spreads evenly with no streaks or gaps. Work in small sections of about 50×50 cm and finish each one before moving to the next.

Mind the flash time: After you apply, the product needs a set time to cure depending on temperature and humidity (flash time). During that window, set the cloth aside and don't touch the surface. Once the flash time is up, buff the product off with a fresh, clean microfibre cloth.

Temperature and humidity: Both have a big effect on the flash time, and with it the timing of your application. In high temperatures (over 25°C) and low humidity a ceramic coating flashes off very fast – the flash time can drop below 60 seconds. In that case, go for an even smaller working area (25×25 cm instead of 50×50 cm), and keep the cloth fresh and lightly loaded. In cool conditions (under 15°C) the flash time gets a lot longer, giving you more room to work. The ideal window is 15–25°C and moderate humidity. The suede cloth stays stable across every temperature range and releases product evenly – an edge over sponge applicators, which stiffen up in the cold and spread product less well.

After use: Store the Q²M Suede in a sealable plastic bag right after use, or bin it once it's fully saturated. Cured coating residue means a cloth can't be fully cleaned any more and should be replaced at that point.

Where it's used: what the Q²M Suede is for

The suede applicator cloth was built primarily for coatings, but it finds use in other areas of car care too.

Ceramic coatings are the main job. Whether GYEON Q²M Mohs, Q²M Wetcoat, Q²M One or another coating from the GYEON range – the Q²M Suede is built to spread all of them out perfectly. Products from other brands go on beautifully with the suede too.

With sealants and polymer sealants the suede cloth is just as ideal. These products have similar needs to ceramic coatings – even spread, nothing too heavy – and they benefit from the controlled absorbency of synthetic suede.

For glass sealants the small 10×10 cm format is especially good. Glass has an even, smooth surface that calls for precise application – above all at the edges and corners of the windscreen. The small format also lets you work precisely around washer jets, mirror housings and side windows.

For wheel sealants the Q²M Suede works well too – even though wheels are a challenge thanks to their shape. Around the spokes and deep-set areas of the wheel the small 10×10 format is ideal: it gets into tight angles and lets you seal the whole wheel face completely. Wheel sealants really pay off, since wheels take a beating from brake dust, temperature swings and stone chips – a good sealant makes cleaning far easier and protects the surface long-term.

The suede cloth also suits applying leather sealants and plastic dressings inside the cabin. The soft surface won't scratch sensitive interior surfaces, and the even product release keeps you from over-applying on seats and door cards.

Comparison: Q²M Suede vs. other applicators

In the coating applicator segment you've got a few tools to choose from – sponge applicators, microfibre cloths and suede. Each has its own pros and cons, and the suede cloth clearly stakes out its place, through its material properties, as a specialist pick for demanding jobs.

Sponge applicators with a microfibre outer are the most common alternative. They pick up product well and are easy to handle, but the downside is that the microfibre structure makes the spread less even than smooth suede does. With ceramic coatings that have a fast flash time, that's a real drawback.

Real suede (animal leather) still gets used now and then by classic-car restorers and some traditional coaters. It has similar properties to synthetic suede, but it's pricier, harder to clean and less consistent to work with. Ordinary microfibre cloths aren't ideal for coating application: the looped structure soaks up too much product, releases it in an uncontrolled way and can't be guided evenly enough. High Spots and streaking are common problems when you use looped microfibre for ceramic coatings.

Once the coating residue in the cloth has cured fully, though, it's done and should be binned. So plan for enough cloths on bigger coating jobs and order a few too many rather than too few.
