  • Dr. Wack vehicle care from Ingolstadt since 1975

What is Dr. Wack? A German vehicle-care manufacturer from Ingolstadt, founded in 1975. The range splits into four lines: A1 for the car, S100 for the motorbike, P21S for wheels and paint, and CW1:100 for the glass. One brand, four clearly separated jobs.

Dr. Wack is the vehicle-care brand of Dr. O.K. Wack Chemie in Ingolstadt, which doesn't run its products as one big range but as four independent lines with a clear remit. A1 covers everyday car care, S100 specialises in the motorbike, P21S handles wheels and paint, CW1:100 keeps your view clear. Once you know which line does what, you'll find the right product in the range faster than by hunting for a product name.

    • Four lines instead of one big mush. A1, S100, P21S and CW1:100 aren't marketing sub-brands, they're separate ranges for separate jobs. You don't search through 80-plus products — you pick the line first, then the category. That saves you the detour through product names nobody remembers.
    • Founded in 1975, grown through specialisation. Founder Dr. Oskar K. Wack came from Procter and Gamble and started out with care chemistry for car and motorbike. S100, the first complete care line to treat a motorbike as a whole — metal, plastic, rubber and paint, not just the tank — came out of this house.
    • Made in Germany, all from one source. Development and production sit in Ingolstadt, and the Consumer Products arm has been running since 1975. For you that means the same formulas year after year — the wheel cleaner that worked two seasons ago does exactly the same job when you buy it again.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: We often see customers buy one line thinking it's another, because the logos look alike. Remember the remit by substrate: A1 is the car all-rounder, P21S is the wheel-and-paint specialist, S100 belongs on the motorbike, CW1:100 goes in the washer-fluid tank. Reach for the S100 cleaner on your car and you'll still get a good product — just one built for the bare metal on a bike, not for the usual car wash.

From the stainless-steel pot to vehicle care in Ingolstadt

The brand starts in 1975 with a chemist who had previously helped develop the cleaner Meister Proper at Procter and Gamble. Dr. Oskar K. Wack set up his own house first with a cleaner for stainless-steel pots, then quickly switched to vehicle care.

In 1977 the company moved to Ingolstadt, where development and production still sit today. The one firm became two arms: Consumer Products for car, motorbike and bicycle care, and from 1990 the Zestron division, which makes cleaning media for electronics manufacturing. The same precision that circuit-board cleaning demands is baked into the standard of the care products.

For your buying decision this background is more than an anecdote. A brand that has kept the same lines for half a century and produces in Germany rarely changes its formulas overnight. That's why experienced users describe the brand as predictable — a product that worked once behaves the same when you buy it again.

That predictability is rarer on the care shelf than it sounds. Plenty of products swap formula and name every season, so the repeat buy turns into a gamble. Here the line logic stays stable for years, which makes building your own routine easier — you learn once how a product works and don't have to figure it out fresh every season.

The four lines and their flagships

Each line has one or two products that show its character. Know those and you'll grasp the whole range faster than through a list of every item.

With A1 car care it's the Speed trio of Speed Shampoo, Speed Polish and Spray Wax — three products for quick maintenance care that bring a well-kept car back to a shine in about 30 minutes. A1 is the all-rounder for the weekend detailing spot, not for heavy correction. The line covers wash, interior, leather, polish and sealant.

The P21S wheel care is the brand's high-end line and made its name through its wheel cleaner. POWER GEL and HIGH END dissolve baked-on brake dust acid-free and with a colour change — the cleaner turns colour wherever it attacks the iron-rich deposit. Add wheel wax and tyre shine, and the wheel gets cleaned and protected in one pass.

The S100 motorbike care counts as the first complete care line for the bike and thinks in mixed materials: metal, plastic, rubber and paint on one machine. Its core is chain care — a chain cleaner and several chain sprays. With CW1:100 the flagship is the Super screen wash, a concentrate for the washer fluid that also comes in a 2.8-litre container.

The chain sprays show the line's depth of detail. S100 offers them in several versions — from the classic spray through the transparent dry-lube variant to the white chain spray that spreads clearly visible on the chain. Which one fits depends on chain type and riding profile, not on price. That's the difference between a one-size-fits-all bottle and a line that has several matched answers for one job.

Cutting across all four lines is the wash gear. The Magic Bucket system of bucket, Dirt-Lock insert and Scrub-Wall separates the loosened dirt from the clean water, so the wash mitt picks up clean foam again after every dip. Day-to-day this is the simplest lever against wash scratches, long before the choice of polish even matters.

How the four lines form one system together

The brand's strength isn't in single bottles but in the way the lines complement each other on a car instead of overlapping. Each one owns a substrate.

On the car A1 takes the panels and the interior, P21S the wheel. That's not chance, it's division of labour: a wheel cleaner needs different chemistry than a paint shampoo, because baked-on brake dust sits more aggressively than road film on the wing. Solve both jobs with one universal product and you compromise in both places. Splitting them into A1 and P21S takes exactly those compromises off your hands.

On the motorbike S100 bundles everything, because a bike makes different demands than a car. An exposed chain, hot metal parts, a delicate seat and a helmet visor need matched products that a car range doesn't bring. CW1:100 sits across everything, because a clear view is no question of vehicle type — the screen-wash concentrate runs in the car just as it does in the motorhome.

The wash gear closes the loop. One brand, four lines, one continuous care idea from pre-wash to sealant. Once you've grasped the system you no longer buy by bottle looks but by job — and reach straight for the right line on the shelf instead of comparing three labels.

How you work your way through vehicle care

The sensible order runs from coarse to fine and from top to bottom. Stick to it and you save yourself double work and protect the paint from avoidable scratches.

On the car you start with the wheel, because P21S cleaner splashes and otherwise the paint would have to be cleaned twice. Spray wheel cleaner onto the cold, dry wheel, let it work for 3 to 5 minutes until the colour change is there, then rinse off with brush and pressure. Only then comes the wash with A1 shampoo, followed by polish and spray wax on the dry paint. You let A1 Spray Wax grab for about 2 minutes and then wipe it off with a dry microfibre cloth.

On the motorbike the chain takes centre stage. Dissolve the chain cleaner, work it through with the brush, rinse off and let the chain dry before fresh chain spray goes on in a thin coat. After about 10 minutes of flashing off it's ready to ride. S100 deliberately splits cleaner and spray, because old grease and dirt have to come off before lubing. The paint and the plastic parts are then handled by the S100 quick cleaner, which comes in the 500 ml spray bottle.

The glass is the last step before the ride. CW1:100 gets dosed into the washer fluid as a concentrate and loosens insect residue on the move, instead of letting it smear across the windscreen. The dried-on insect film on the front and mirrors gets lifted off beforehand by the insect-remover gel. That keeps your view clear without you having to scrub at a standstill.

How often each step is due depends on your riding profile. The wash with A1 pays off every one to two weeks, the wheel clean with P21S as needed, as soon as brake dust shows. Spray wax and sealant hold for several weeks depending on the weather, and chain care on the motorbike goes by the kilometres ridden and the conditions. Know the intervals and you buy on target, instead of standing ten half-open bottles on the shelf.

Where Dr. Wack sits between hobby and pro

Placed honestly, the brand sits in the solid midfield with a few outliers on the upside. It's broader than pure pro lines and more approachable than the hobby shelves at the DIY store.

Its biggest strength is the breadth across four vehicle areas from one source. If you want to cover car, motorbike and clear view with one brand, you don't have to mix three makers and hope the products get along. The P21S wheel cleaner plays in a higher league than the rest and is prized even by users who otherwise reach for specialist detailing brands.

The honest limit: the brand isn't a supplier for no-compromise paint correction with cutting polishes in five cut stages, or for multi-year ceramic coatings. The A1 polish is a hand polish for upkeep, not a machine polish for deep scratches. If you're after serious paint correction in that sense, you pair the brand with a specialist polishing or sealant system.

That placement isn't a weakness, it's a question of ambition. For the regular care that keeps a vehicle clean, protected and holding its value, the range covers everyday life reliably. For the last bit of concours shine or the reconditioning of a heavily weathered paint, you need extra tools that the brand deliberately doesn't set out to replace.

    Which line fits your vehicle

In the end it's the vehicle that decides, not the brand name. Three questions take you quickly to the right line.

If you mostly drive a car and want one brand for wash, interior and paint, A1 is your entry, rounded out with P21S for the wheel. That combination covers the complete car care and is the most common way into the range. You add the CW1:100 Super screen wash for the washer fluid, because it's needed all year round.

If you're a rider, you start with S100, because no car line handles the mixed materials and the exposed chain of a bike cleanly. Chain care is the first buy here, the motorbike cleaner the second. Ride both worlds and you pair A1 or P21S for the car with S100 for the bike and still keep everything with one brand.

If it's mostly about wheels that are full of brake dust after every drive, the road leads straight to P21S. Day-to-day, the wheel cleaner is the product most customers first get to know the brand through, and the one they then find the other lines from. All four ranges are sorted by application, so from the line you land on the specific category in one step, instead of clicking through an unsorted overall shelf.

Not sure where to start, the wheel cleaner is the most pragmatic first grab. It shows a visible result fastest, because clean wheels often make more of a well-kept car than any other single move. From there you build the routine in the direction your vehicle demands — car, motorbike or simply a clear view. The range grows with your ambition, instead of forcing you straight into a complete set that stands half unused in the cupboard and dries out by next spring.
