The right routine on cool paint

A quick detailer works best on cool paint in the shade, panel by panel, with two clean microfibre cloths. That sounds simple, but it decides whether you create shine or work in fine scratches. The most important rule concerns the dust before the first spritz.

First the surface underneath. Dry dust and pollen act like fine sandpaper when you wipe. If you feel grit or see dirt standing on the paint, you don't wipe — you rinse it off with water first. On a dusty panel, spray onto the cloth rather than straight onto the paint; that gives you more control. Let it sit for about a minute, then take it off with the first soft microfibre.

A word on the cloth, because it so often gets lost. The best chemistry is worth nothing if the microfibre cloth is hard, old or full of dirt, because then you rub the dust you just lifted straight back into the paint.
