A ceramic coating locks in exactly the paint it finds
The most honest question we ever got on this came in through the chat, typed in lower case, and it wasn't about hardness or gloss: how many hours before rain is allowed to hit fresh ceramic? Ask that and you have already understood that a coating isn't a product you apply, it's a process that needs time. That is where most coatings fall over — not at the bottle, but in the two days after it.
A ceramic coating is a one to three micron layer of silicon dioxide that cures on top of your clear coat. It doesn't change the state of your paint. It freezes it, along with every swirl you leave in there.
A ceramic coating is a thin layer of glass on the clear coat
A ceramic coating for your car is a liquid-applied coating based on silicon dioxide that cross-links chemically with the clear coat and cures there as a glass-like layer one to three microns thick.
That number is worth a second. The clear coat on a current production car sits at around forty microns, and about eight of those are your entire correction budget for the life of the car. The coating on top is thinner than any polishing step you will ever run. It's a film, not armour.
Chemically this isn't marketing talk. Silicon dioxide is the same compound quartz glass is made of — hence the name. The layer is hard, chemically inert and seriously water-repellent: it pushes the contact angle a droplet sits at to over a hundred and ten degrees. The droplet stops lying flat on the paint and pulls itself into a tight bead. That's the beading half the scene buys these products for.
The practical difference to wax is the bond. A carnauba wax sits on the paint physically, softens in summer heat and washes off over a few weeks. A ceramic coating forms a chemical bond with the clear coat surface. You can't wash it off any more, you can only polish it off — its biggest strength and its biggest risk in one.
What a coating explicitly is not: a repair. It fills nothing and levels nothing. A polish removes material and corrects; a coating adds material and preserves. Mix those two steps up and you buy the wrong product for your problem.
Ceramic polymer and wax differ mainly in how long they last
The three protection classes differ less in gloss than in how often you have to do the whole thing again. Wax lasts weeks, a polymer sealant months, a real ceramic coating years.
At the bottom end sits the wet-applied sealant. The limit is just as clear — a few washes later the build-up is gone again.
In the middle sits the polymer sealant. Nine H on the bottle says nothing about scratch resistance
The most common expectation of a ceramic coating is the one thing it definitely won't deliver: it does not make your paint scratch proof. That much-quoted 9H figure comes from the pencil hardness test, a coatings test where a lead of defined hardness is drawn across the surface — not from the Mohs scale most people picture.
Two questions land with us again and again, and they show exactly where the expectation tips over: does a ceramic coating help against stone chips, and does it protect against iron fallout. Twice no. A stone chip is a mechanical impact carrying energy that three microns can do nothing about — that's what paint protection film is for, a completely different product.
Iron fallout is embedded brake-dust particles, and they settle on a coated surface too. The coating makes it harder for them to key in; it doesn't stop them. Anyone who has seen a coated wheel after a season knows the fallout remover still comes out.
What the layer genuinely does is chemical defence. It stands between your clear coat and bird droppings, bug splatter, tree sap, road salt and UV, with a resilience no wax gets near. Your paint doesn't become invulnerable, but the windows get longer: what etches bare clear coat in hours usually has a day's grace on a coating.
And there is one downside that barely shows up anywhere, because it runs against intuition: a highly hydrophobic coating can make water spots worse. The droplet that pulls into a tight bead at over a hundred and ten degrees acts optically like a plano-convex lens and focuses sunlight onto one tiny point — exactly where the minerals gather as it evaporates.
Since chemical reactions roughly double in speed for every ten degrees of temperature, a harmless dew drop turns into a small burning glass. That's why experienced detailers in hard-water regions increasingly favour products with pronounced sheeting behaviour. What runs off in sheets can't focus anything.
The coating preserves the paint it finds
The most expensive mistake in coating costs nothing extra and happens before you apply anything: coat neglected paint and you own neglected paint under glass for the next two years. The coating doesn't ask about the condition, it fixes it in place.
It fools people so reliably because paint looks fine from three metres away nearly every time. Only in the raking light of an inspection lamp or a low sun do the fine wash marks show up, the ones that build over a season.
Those cobwebs get coated in along with everything else. Because the layer is chemically bonded you can't wash them out any more — you can only polish the coating and the clear coat underneath off together. That's why every coating job starts with the full chain: wash, chemical decon, clay, polish — and then degrease. That last step is the one beginners skip and pros never leave out. Polishing oils fill fine scratches optically and make the paint look better than it is.
While those oils sit on the surface you see neither the true condition nor get any grip for the coating. You spray it onto the towel, never onto the paint — otherwise you spread the dissolved dirt around instead of picking it up. One towel to apply, a second dry one to follow, and swap the application towel every two to three panels.
Laying it down takes hours curing takes days
The application itself is the shortest part of the project. Coating onto the applicator, panel by panel in a cross-hatch, thin and even, wait out the flash time until a faint rainbow sheen appears, then level it off with a clean microfibre.
On the first panel you prime the applicator generously, after that one line of product per section is plenty. Lay it on too thick or level it too late and you get high spots — leftover coating that only comes off with a polisher once it has cured.
The conditions are tighter than the effort suggests. Manufacturers usually quote ten to thirty degrees working temperature and thirty to eighty per cent relative humidity. Outside that corridor the layer cures unevenly or keys in worse. In direct sun on hot metal the product flashes before you can level it.
Then comes the part that chat question nailed so precisely: keep it dry for twenty-four hours, better forty-eight. That's when the coating fully cross-links. Rain, morning dew or a stray sprinkler in the first hours leave marks in the still-soft layer or disturb the cure for good.
After that, rain is a complete non-issue. Which makes the forecast not a side note but part of your material planning. If you want to coat, that's your window — and after it, nothing for a good fortnight.
One thing almost nobody mentions belongs here: a real coating is a hazardous substance. No reason to stay away from it — every reason to work in nitrile gloves, with the door open and no cigarette anywhere near it.
Who it's worth the effort for and who it isn't
A ceramic coating for your car is worth it when three things line up: paint that is corrected or about to be, a car that matters to you long term, and the willingness to wash differently afterwards. Take one of those away and a different product is the better call.
The cost question almost always gets asked in euros and almost always answered wrong. The honest price isn't on the bottle, it's in your calendar: one to two full days. Wash, decon, clay, at least one polishing pass, degrease, coat — and then the car stands still for two days.
On the material side it stays manageable: the coating, an applicator with suede cloths, a clean levelling towel, and the degreaser you must not cut corners on. Coming out of a polish, your last step is a finishing polish matched to the coating that follows — there are polishes formulated exactly as coating primers. What comes after the coating decides its life more than the product does. Minerals from hard water clog the microscopic surface, the beading collapses, the panel goes flat. You learn flash time, applicator control and spotting high spots on a panel where a mistake is gone in twenty minutes instead of a full day of polishing.
A ceramic coating isn't a substitute for care, it's a commitment to it. It rewards people who like keeping their car straight anyway with less work per wash and paint that still looks like the first summer two years on. For everybody else it's an expensive layer over a problem that simply carries on underneath.

Clear nights with high humidity are the underrated killer — last night we had eleven degrees at ninety-five per cent here, and a car standing outside in that is soaking wet by morning without a drop of rain falling.
