Windscreen inside and out, side windows, mirrors and the displays in the cockpit. Unlike an all-round towel from paint care, they don't carry any wax, detailer or dressing residue. That's exactly what counts on glass, because every bit of residue shows up as a streak against the light. You pick a glass towel by its job, soaking up or final wipe, not by the highest GSM.

Two jobs, two weaves. The first towel breaks up the film and takes up the cleaner, the second does the dry final wipe. BMW advises against ammonia-based products on touchscreens.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: Wash a new glass towel before you use it for the first time; THE COLLECTION states this explicitly for the Waffle. After that, it never goes in the same drum as wax, polishing or wheel towels and never comes into contact with fabric softener. A glass towel that's been dropped on the floor goes back in the wash before it's allowed near a window again. Mineral particles in the weave can scratch glass too, not just paint.

A glass towel must not put anything back on the glass

What sets a glass towel apart from a normal microfibre towel isn't some miracle material, it's what it has touched before: only glass, glass cleaner and water.

Microfibre picks up dirt mechanically. The split polyester and polyamide fibres pull liquid and particles into the gaps between them. Whatever was sitting in those gaps before comes back out on the next wipe. On paint, a slightly greasy towel residue hardly shows. On the windscreen, it's right in front of you as haze in the headlights at night.

So the glass towel question is first about keeping things separate and only then about the weave. A towel that has once taken off spray wax, quick detailer or trim dressing keeps releasing small amounts of them. The window looks clean after you've wiped it and shows every pass the next morning, as soon as the sun sits low.

That's why the scene works with fixed colours. The parent category Towels & microfibre explains the colour system in detail; with us, blue means glass. For this page, the consequence is all you need: a glass towel is a towel you never use for anything else. A paint or wheel towel never gets promoted to glass towel later.

According to Ahrefs, monthly search volume for glass towels in Germany has grown by 59 percent in five years, but the search results mostly show window and mirror cloths for the home. The job in a car is different. On the inside there's a film you don't get like that in a living room, plus window tint, touchscreens and the cover glass of the head-up display.

Waffle, diamond and smooth weave do different jobs

With a glass towel, the weave decides the job: waffle soaks up a lot of liquid, smooth-woven towels give almost nothing back, and diamond sits in between and glides best when slightly damp.

The waffle towel has small pockets in the weave. Water, cleaner residue and loosened dirt disappear into them instead of being pushed around the glass. That makes the waffle the towel for the first, absorbing wipe and for drying small areas after a wash. THE COLLECTION lists exactly these uses for the Waffle: taking off glass cleaner, mirrors, displays, spot drying.

Smooth or tightly woven towels hold less. That sounds like a drawback and is the advantage on the last pass, because a towel with little capacity also gives little back. Makers of smooth glass towels such as Adam's or Duel Autocare use them specifically for the finish.

Diamond is a hybrid of waffle and smooth weave. The Rag Company recommends dampening the diamond towel slightly with water or spray cleaner and then wiping over with a clean towel. Used dry as a finishing towel, community users describe it as grabby, more drag than glide. That's not a flaw in the towel, it's a hint about its role.

The scene doesn't agree on which weave is better. Manufacturers use the waffle for the first wipe, while one community user reports never getting the glass fully dry with waffle towels and switching to smooth ones. Our take: the role in the routine decides, not the weave alone. Soaking up and the final wipe are two moves, and there's a weave for each.

Some manufacturers combine both moves in one towel. On the Premium Glass & Window, The Rag Company pairs a textured cord side for loosening with a smooth side for the final wipe. That saves a towel in the glovebox but takes discipline: the wet side mustn't soak through to the dry side when you flip it, or the idea loses its edge.

With glass towels, GSM says little about suitability

GSM gives the weight of the towel in grams per square metre; for a glass towel, the number describes capacity and job, not the quality of the towel.

The figures in the range are far apart. The Koch-Chemie Pro Glass Towel has 230 g/m² with a very fine structure, The Rag Company Diamond 280, the GYEON Q²M GlassWipe EVO 390 and the Waffle from THE COLLECTION 450. Each of these numbers stands for a towel built for glass. None is worse for being lighter.

Higher GSM means more capacity. For the first wipe, which has to take up cleaner and loosened film, that's what you want. For the last pass, a big capacity tends to get in the way, because a nearly saturated towel gives moisture back. The blanket rule from the towel shelf, heavier means more absorbent and therefore better, falls short on glass.

Why a 450 GSM waffle towel still belongs on glass comes down to structure. The waffle is flat and has no plush pile in which fibres come loose or residue hides. You'll find the general weight classes and edge types for microfibre under Microfibre towels. For glass, what counts is how flat the weave lies and how much it's meant to soak up.

The size follows the job too. 40 × 40 cm, as on the Waffle and GlassWipe EVO, folds once and gives you several fresh sides for one window. Bigger sizes such as the 60 × 40 cm of the Koch-Chemie towel cover a rear window in fewer passes, but the result isn't any better. Inside, behind the steering wheel, the smaller size is handier.

A glass towel with care residue lays down the haze itself

The haze on the inside of the glass comes from three sources: outgassing from the interior, skin oils and smoke, and residue from the very towel you're trying to remove it with.

Plastics, vinyl and textiles in the interior release volatile compounds when warm, and these settle on the cooler glass. The materials industry calls this fogging; for new vehicles, a service bulletin documents a faster film build-up. How this film forms chemically and which cleaner dissolves it is explained in detail in the Glass cleaner category.

The towel side of the problem gets less attention. A glass towel that has been washed with wax, dressing or polishing towels brings along exactly the substances that sit on the glass as film. The same goes for fabric softener, which coats the fibre and transfers to the glass the next time you use it. The result looks like a bad cleaner and is really a contaminated towel.

So on the inside, you spray the cleaner onto the towel, not the glass. Mercedes-Benz points out in its owner's manual that excess liquid can run behind trim panels and damage electronics. The waffle towel takes up loosened film and cleaner, and the second, dry towel does the final wipe. The full routine, including wiping direction, is on the glass cleaner page.

Two conditions amplify every towel mistake: hot glass and too much product. On a sun-warmed window, the cleaner dries before the towel can pick it up, and a towel loaded with cleaner saturates quickly. Better a little cleaner on the towel and the glass worked in the shade.

Whether the glass is really clear only shows against the light. Several voices in the community advise checking the result in low sun or the next morning, not in the shade straight after cleaning. If an even haze remains even though cleaner and technique are right, take a look at the towel and its last wash.

The Waffle from THE COLLECTION is our everyday glass towel

In the glass towel category, the THE COLLECTION "Waffle" is our standard: 450 GSM waffle, 40 × 40 cm, 70 percent polyester and 30 percent polyamide, with a suede edge.

The Waffle covers the absorbing part of glass work. It takes off glass cleaner, dries mirrors and small glass areas after a wash and, according to the manufacturer, also works on displays. The suede edge is meant for surfaces where a hard edge would get in the way. For a window inside and out, plan on two of them, or one Waffle plus a second, dry towel.

If you work in the GYEON system, the GYEON Q²M GlassWipe EVO Waffeltuch aus Mikrofaser für Glasreinigung (390 GSM) is a slightly lighter waffle towel in the same size. Two GlassWipe EVOs cover both moves, one for loosening and spreading, one for the finish. In the shop it sits under microfibre towels.

The SONAX PROFILINE MicrofaserTuch "Glas" Mikrofasertuch comes in a pack of three. SONAX describes it as absorbent and lint-free and recommends it together with its own glass cleaners. Three towels are handy for detailers who do several cars a day and want a fresh towel per car.

The glass tells you when a glass towel is done. A sign it's time to replace it: after washing, the towel no longer takes up moisture, or it starts to glide across the glass instead of gripping. If a freshly washed towel leaves lint or streaks on clean glass, it's no longer a glass towel. It can carry on working on wheels or door sills.

If you only do the windows now and then, you don't need a whole set. One Waffle for the first wipe and a second, clean towel reserved for glass only from today are enough for inside and out. In our shop, customers search about six times more often for glass cleaner than for glass towels. Yet the towel shares the say in the result, because it either picks up the loosened film or spreads it around.

Window tint, displays and head-up displays set the limits for a glass towel

On window tint, touchscreens and the head-up display, the weave matters less than the condition of the towel: clean, soft, no sand and no ammonia-based cleaner.

For window tint, XPEL recommends a microfibre cloth slightly dampened with water and, if needed, a mild ammonia-free cleaner. 3M advises against cleaning freshly fitted film for 48 hours and warns of sand or dust in the water as a scratch risk. Blades, scrapers and abrasives have no business on film. The glass towel should only work with light pressure here.

Displays can have an anti-glare or anti-fingerprint coating. BMW names this explicitly for its touchscreens and advises against ammonia-based products there; Volvo specifies a clean, dry microfibre cloth without window cleaner, alcohol or ammonia. Volvo cleans the head-up display cover glass dry or with a slightly damp cloth, Mercedes-Benz with a soft, lint-free cloth and no cleaning agent. Your clean glass towel does the job; only use a glass cleaner there if the vehicle manufacturer approves it.

On coated glass the glass towel stays the same; go easy on the tools. GYEON recommends normal glass cleaner and no abrasive pads for coated glass. Polycarbonate windows, like those on some track cars, aren't glass. Here the window maker's approval applies before any cleaner goes on.

One area inside deserves special attention: the patch in front of the camera behind the rear-view mirror. Mercedes-Benz points out that dirt or fogging in front of the multifunction camera can limit driver assistance systems. Work there with a slightly damp glass towel and little cleaner so no liquid runs into the housing.

The limit all these notes share is the towel itself. On film, displays and the head-up display, it's the only tool that touches the surface: blade, pad and abrasives are out, cleaner only with approval. What the towel leaves behind there, no further step will fix. That's why these surfaces get your cleanest, separately washed glass towel. The Meguiar's PERFECT CLARITY Glass Towel is built differently — designed from the ground up for what glass actually needs. It leaves no streaks, no smears and no lint that clings to freshly cleaned glass through static. The difference isn't marketing, it's physics: the special fibre structure of the glass cleaning cloth soaks up cleaner residue and moisture evenly instead of pushing it around the surface. What you get is optically flawless glass — inside and out, in any light, with no going back over it.

Streak-free result, guaranteed: the purpose-built microfibre structure stops streaks and wipe marks on car windows, windscreens and mirrored surfaces — even in strong sunlight the glass stays clean and clear.

Lint-free & surface-safe: the cloth sheds no fibres or particles onto the glass. Use the first half to wipe off the glass cleaner you've laid on, the second half for a final dry pass with no product. This two-stage method kills even stubborn streaks completely — and it really shines on the inside of the windscreen, where tight angles and light reflections make the job awkward.

The tech behind the result — what really makes the Glass Towel special

Not all microfibre towels are the same. If you've been through a few, you know the types: the ones that smear, the ones that shed lint, and the ones that lose their pull after three washes. The PERFECT CLARITY Glass Towel fits none of those. Its fibre geometry is aimed precisely at glass — the fibres take the cleaning fluid up instead of rubbing it around. That's exactly what stops the white streaks you get from the wrong cloth, where dissolved residue gets spread back over the surface instead of lifted off.

The weave is soft enough to leave no micro-scratches on coated or treated glass — and structured enough to lift dirt off without scrubbing it in. That balance is what counts when you clean glass: glass marks far more easily than clear coat. It matters most on the inside of the windscreen. Scratches on the inner glass are hard to spot from outside, but they throw off distracting reflections and glare at night or into low sun — a comfort and safety issue the right cloth avoids completely.

The cloth measures 40×60 cm — big enough to work large glass areas efficiently, compact enough for precise work in corners and along rubber seals. The carefully stitched edges stop it fraying in the wash and keep the fibre structure intact over the long run. If you care about consistent results, you'll spot it quickly: that little detail makes a real difference day-to-day.

The colour is no accident either — the PERFECT CLARITY Glass Towel comes in a distinctive blue. In the detailing world blue has always meant one thing: glass and windows. That informal colour-coding makes cloths easy to sort at a glance and keeps you from mixing them up with the yellow or red polishing cloths for paint. If you look after several cars or work in a professional setting, you'll value that quick visual tell — it saves time and heads off costly slip-ups with the wrong product.

Step by step — how to use it for the best results

Using the glass cloth sounds simple, but it's where the result is won or lost. Step one: put the glass cleaner straight onto the cloth, not onto the glass. That stops drips that dry on the spot and leave white marks — a real pain in summer under direct sun. Step two: wipe in even, horizontal passes, top to bottom first, then left to right. That cross-wipe covers the whole pane and leaves no blind spots.

For the inside of the windscreen, fold the cloth around something flat — a flat cleaning pad, or just the back of your hand — to reach the awkward lower stretch near the dash. The glass cloth is thin and flexible enough to get into those angles without losing any pull. On the side windows and the rear screen you can wipe freehand — generous top-to-bottom strokes, then flip the cloth to the clean side and go over it once dry.

When the glass is properly dirty — after a long spell parked up, a drive through pollen season or a fresh dusting of Saharan sand — don't force the cloth against the grit. Soften heavy dirt first with the glass cleaner, give it 30 seconds, and only then wipe. That soak protects the fibres and stops coarse particles being dragged across the glass and leaving scratches.

One more handy tip: hold the cloth up to the light after you've used it. A clean, working microfibre shows an even, open fibre structure with no dirt lodged in it. Do that check regularly and you'll know straight away when a cloth needs washing — before it does more harm than good next time out. The routine takes five seconds and stretches the working life of every cloth considerably.

The PERFECT CLARITY system — glass cleaning as one matched package

The Glass Towel is part of Meguiar's PERFECT CLARITY ecosystem for professional glass care. The ideal workflow goes like this: first take the PERFECT CLARITY Glass Cleaner to deep-clean the glass and lift oily film and water spots — then use the cloth for the streak-free wipe. If the glass has taken more of a beating from the weather, or you want lasting water beading, the PERFECT CLARITY Glass Sealant rounds out the system: after cleaning it seals the surface with a durable hydrophobic effect that makes future dirt far easier to shift.

The system is built on purpose so cleaner and cloth work as a pair. Other cloths can get by with the glass cleaner — but the Glass Towel is tuned to its exact consistency and the way it flashes off. That cuts how much cleaner you need per go and lifts efficiency at the same time. Day-to-day that means: faster cleaning, less product burned through, a better result for less effort.

One clear note for anyone who also runs drying towels on their paint: the Glass Towel doesn't replace a general WATER MAGNET Drying Towel for paint care — it's tuned specifically for glass and should be kept to glass only. Mixing the jobs would carry wax or polish residue off the paint and onto the glass, creating exactly the streaks the cloth is meant to prevent. Keeping separate cloths for glass and paint isn't a luxury — it's the foundation of consistently clean results.

Where it works — the surfaces the glass cloth handles best

The PERFECT CLARITY Glass Towel isn't built for the windscreen alone. It works reliably on every glass surface on the car: side windows, rear screen, wing mirrors, interior mirror, and the polished chrome frames around the glass. On cars with tinted windows or wraps the cloth is especially gentle — the fibre structure leaves no rub marks on delicate film surfaces.

Beyond that, the glass cloth is brilliant on other smooth, high-gloss surfaces: motorcycle fairings with clear sections, motorhome windscreens, and boat windows in plastic or laminated glass. For glasses or camera lenses the cloth is technically fine — in that case reach for a freshly washed one that hasn't touched the car yet, so you don't carry vehicle residue onto optical gear.

On cars treated with hydrophobic SiO₂ coatings, the right cloth matters even more. The PERFECT CLARITY cloth is chemically neutral toward the usual glass sealants and nano coatings — it won't damage the protective layer when you use it properly. That's a clear edge over cheaper all-purpose microfibres, whose rougher fibre surface can wear the coating down over time and cut the beading short.

Anyone who regularly looks after cars with a glass sealant knows: the sealant is only as good as the cloth you maintain it with. The wrong cloth carrying wax residue can knock the beading of a freshly applied sealant back to nothing within a handful of uses — a common and annoying problem. The PERFECT CLARITY Glass Towel heads that off with its clean, grease-free fibre structure, which should be kept to glass and glass-like surfaces only.

Care, longevity & buying advice — the right cloth for your job

A quality specialist cloth is an investment that pays for itself many times over with the right care. The PERFECT CLARITY Glass Towel handles 50–100 wash cycles without fuss, as long as you stick to the basics. The big one: no fabric softener. Softener settles as a residue film between the fine fibres and creates exactly the smearing the cloth is supposed to prevent. When a cloth starts smearing, poor care is usually the real cause — not a fault in the product.

Also important: don't wash the cloth together with towels heavily loaded with waxes, oils or polishes. Those residues can transfer onto the glass cloth in the wash and lodge in the fibres for good. Separate washes for glass and paint cloths are the cleanest answer. For telling them apart we like colour markers — a coloured sticker, a coloured elastic band or different storage bags. Once you've set that up, you wonder why you didn't always do it this way.

The PERFECT CLARITY Glass Towel is the right cloth for anyone who treats streak-free glass as the standard, not the exception. Next to plain household microfibres it costs more — but measured against the hassle bad cloths cause, it pays for itself after just a few uses. Once you've seen the streak-free windscreen after the first pass, you don't go back to the all-purpose cloth. That's not hype, it's the everyday feedback we get from our customers.

Wash at 40°C max on a gentle cycle, no high-heat tumble drying. Air drying at room temperature or the dryer on its lowest setting keeps the fibre geometry intact for good. Let it dry fully after washing before you put it away — damp microfibres pick up odours fast and mould can set in. Storing it in a clean, sealed bag keeps dust off that would otherwise land straight on the glass next time.

For professional detailers working several cars a day, a rotation of 3–5 cloths makes sense. That way there's always a freshly washed one to hand while the others are in the wash. The SUPREME Drying Towel Extra Large rounds the setup out nicely for drying paint after the wash — together the two cloths cover every critical step after washing the car, cleanly split by where they're used.

Common questions about the Meguiar's PERFECT CLARITY Glass Towel

<details>

Can I use the Glass Towel on my car's paint too?

Technically you can, but we'd firmly advise against it. The Glass Towel is tuned for glass — used on paint, it may carry glass-cleaner residue onto the paintwork and cause streaks.
